Buffalo Sabres vs New York Rangers Game Recap 3/22/21

The 2021 Sabres now have something in common with the Tank Sabres, both teams had 14-game losing (winless) streaks during their respective seasons.

New York handed Buffalo another loss, and the Sabres lost more than just the game on Monday night.

Recap

  1. BUF – Rasmus Asplund

1-1 NYR – Kaapo Kakko

2-1 NYR – Chris Kreider

3-1 NYR – Adam Fox

3-2 BUF – Dylan Cozens

3-3 BUF – Jeff Skinner

4-3 NYR – Chris Kreider

5-3 NYR – Kaapo Kakko

Hutton injury

Early in the first period Carter Hutton left the game and did not return. Dustin Tokarski had to come in for the injured goalie and played his first NHL game in a long time.

Tokarski faired well considering the circumstances, but now the focus has to shift to the Sabres future plans in net. With Johansson gone, Ullmark still out and Hutton’s health up in the air the Sabres only have Tokarski, Michael Houser and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen as healthy goalies in the organization.

Granato and the Sabres will have to make due with what they have unless Kevyn Adams finds a way to add another goalie to the organization.

Jeff Skinner is back…it appears

After scoring one goal between January 13th and March 7th, Jeff Skinner now has two goals in his last three games.

The winger has begun to look like his old self as of late, he’s more engaged in the game and is back to being an agitator as well as scoring goals.

Two things stick out about this goal, the first one is the pass by Montour and the other is Skinner generating this quality chance off the rush.

If Skinner can continue to generate quality chances and shoot the puck like he did on this goal then he will start to rebound and Sabres fans will have something to look forward to for the rest of the season.

Youngsters find the scoreboard

The Sabres managed to score three times in this game, although they lost, fans can take solace in the fact that two of the three goals were scored by young players who could be apart of the team’s future.

Rasmus Asplund scored his second goal in only six games played this season and Dylan Cozens scored a beauty for his fourth of the year.

There’s not a lot left to be excited about this year but the Sabres getting offence from young players is always going to be encouraging.

Hopefully these two can keep it up and maybe the Sabres will recall some more young talent to get some excitement from the fanbase and the on-ice product.

Looking Ahead

The Sabres play Pittsburgh on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
