The San Jose Sharks are reportedly close to signing former Sabres forward Evander Kane to a multi-year extension.

If the reports are true then Sabres will be getting another top quality asset in their pocket. Kane re-signing with the Sharks means that the 2019 draft pick that Botterill got in return becomes a first round pick.

Before Kane stepped on the ice it seemed that the Sharks were interested in bringing him back next season. If this was true the Sharks interest escalated very quickly, the former Sabre regained his form in San Jose scoring nine goals and 14 points in 17 games.

Kane continued his scoring success in his first post-season scoring four goals in nine playoff games for the Sharks.

The report hasn’t been confirmed yet but after yesterday’s report that the Sharks were willing to offer Kane a long-term deal things seem to be lining up for a Kane extension in San Jose.

Impact on Buffalo

The impact on Buffalo is very significant, they would have two first-round picks in the 2019 NHL Draft. Both picks can be used to help rebuild the Sabres prospect pool or Botterill can use the Sharks pick in a trade to help add to the roster this off-season.

Regardless of Botterill’s usage of the pick the Sabres will have another asset in their cupboard if/when the signing is confirmed. Not to mention that fans will be able to feel more comfortable with the return that Botterill received.
